SUPERB PAIR OF ANTIQUE GEORGIAN GUN METAL / BRASS / BRONZE NEOCLASSICAL CANDLESTICKS MADE IN THE 1780s, TO COMMEMORATE THE BRITISH SIEGE OF GIBRALTAR. The form itself is neoclassical with a square tapering column on top of a square incurved base with 3 rows of beading. The column and base are beautifully engraved with the images invoking the victorious spirit of victory; images such as bows and arrows, rifles, drums, quivers, spears, and swords. The photos may not adequately capture the beauty of the engraving.

References for the form can be found on page 185 in Schiffer's "The Brass Book" and Michaelis' "Old Domestic Base Metal Candlesticks" on page 123, Fig 177. The condition is very fine, with no damage or repairs. They do not have their original bobeches, or removable nozzles. They sit flat and straight. The holes underneath were long ago plugged with corks, probably originally.

There are residuals of old polish in the recesses here and there. One column is very slightly loose and is totally stable. The brass or bronze has a high copper content that gives the candlesticks more of a coppery color. Bases are 4 1/4 inches square. Each candlestick weighs about 26 ounces.
