Is a truly fabulous and extremely rare, genuine original, antique Edwardian, circa 1904, Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts, hand-crafted, Archibald Knox for Liberty & Co, polished tudric pewter, trio handled dish with a superb whiplash design, set in relief, complete with original Whitefriars James Powell, green glass liner. This trio dish has got the impressed English Pewter Liberty & Co tudric 0162 base stamp. Archibald Knox started his schooling at St.

Barnabas Elementary School, and later attended Douglas Grammar School and Douglas School of Art, developing a lifelong interest in Celtic art. His designs for Liberty's have made him a household name, as did his watercolours, graphic designs and fonts.

His design talent covered a wide range of objects, ornamental and utilitarian, and included silver and pewter tea sets, inkwells, boxes, gravestones and even bank cheques, much for Liberty's tudric (pewter) and Cymric (precious metals) ranges. The gravestone of Liberty's founder, Arthur Lasenby Liberty, was designed by Knox.

In 1897 he started teaching at Redhill School of Art where his friend A. Collister was principal, leaving with him for the Kingston School of Art in 1899. In 1913 he spent a year in the USA, and on his return to the Isle of Man acted as a censor of internees' letters during World War 1. After the war, he again took up teaching art at some of the Manx schools. Archibald Knox is, without doubt, one of the most creative of the Arts & Crafts designers. His wonderfully evocative and emotive designs, which are inspired by our ancient Celtic past, blend stylishly within the modern-day home. Arthur Lasenby Liberty was born in Chesham, Buckinghamshire in 1843. By 1874, after 10 years of service with Farmer & Rogers, he decided to start his own business.

Objects of art from Japan. Within eighteen months Arthur Liberty had repaid the loan and acquired the second half of 218 Regent Street. The basement was named the Eastern Bazaar, because of its "decorative furnishing objects".

He also named the property Chesham House after where he grew up. The store soon became the most fashionable place to shop in London. Some of its clientele was exotic and included famous Pre-Raphaelite artists. In November 1885, Liberty brought forty-two villagers from India to stage a living village of Indian artisans.

Liberty's specialised in imported Indian silks, and the aim of the display was to generate both publicity and sales for the store. However, it was a disaster commercially and publicly, with concern about the way the villagers were put on display. Although it did highlight his futuristic forward thinking! During the 1890s Arthur Lasenby Liberty built strong relationships with many English designers. Many of these designers, including Archibald Knox, practised the artistic styles known as Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau, and Liberty helped develop Art Nouveau through his encouragement of such designers. The company became associated with this new style, to the extent that in Italy, Art Nouveau became known as'Stile Liberty' after the London shop. The store became one of the most prestigious in London. Height: 1.5 inches or 3.8 cm. Diameter: 5.5 inches 14.1 cm (widest point). Weight: 1lb 2oz or 510 grams.
