Superb Rare Antique John Round & Son Glass & Silver Plated Cruet Set, 1874-1886

  
Here on offer is a superb rare antique John Round & Son Ltd, glass and silver plated cruet set, dating to between 1874 and 1886. The firm was established by John Round in Sheffield in 1847, in a family workshop at his home in Tudor Street. The business was successful and in 1874 became John Round Ltd and was now one of the largest silversmiths and electroplaters in the world. The company enjoyed collaborations with the top designers of the day. On his death in 1877, his son took over, the business was managed largely, by its directors.

The trade mark for the silverplate was JR & S with a globe surrounded by the inscription'ALL THE ROUND'. In 1886, the globe mark was changed to the four trident mark. By the 1930s the company used an incredible variety of trademarks. By the end of the 19. Century the company had showrooms in London, Montreal and other cities.

Victorian cruet set comprising an open salt, a pepper shaker, and a mustard pot housed in a silver plated stand. The stand has a trefoil base supported on three spherical feet. It has a gallery with three compartments. The handle is a partially open fan shape. The silver plating has is in excellent condition with almost no signs of use or age.

The overall measurements of the stand are approximately 13cm in height (including handle), with the base measuring 11.2cm by 11.2cm. The open salt is a hand blown shallow bowl that is free of decoration. The salt measures 5.7cm in diameter by 3.4cm. The salt spoon is a replacement, but is in great condition and sits well in the overall composition, it measures 6.4cm in length.

The pepper shaker has a hand blown clear glass base that is free of decoration. The body has a silver plated collar and push on lid with a spherical finial and holes in a star formation.

It measures 5.7cm in diameter by 7.1cm. The mustard pot has a hand blown clear glass base that is free of decoration. The body has a silver plated collar that holds a hinged lid with a spherical finial and a notch cut for the spoon.

The mustard spoon is original and carries the mark on the neck. The spoon measures 8.7cm in length. An elegantly stylish and usable piece of antique tableware.
